Aging Out Intiative
Located in Jelgava
The Aging Out Initiative in Jelgava focuses on the holistic care of young adults who have either aged out of traditional residential care or have been left without wraparound support as a result of deinstitutionalization efforts in Latvia. These young adults face an unsure future, and without care are at high risk of falling victim to criminal activity, drug abuse, sexual exploitation and trafficking, and suicide. Through the program, they are provided mentorship, counseling, and support to help them make a healthy transition to independent life.
Jelgava, Latvia, was home to one of the largest orphanages in the country. In 2018, the country focused its efforts on deinstitutionalization of orphan care programs, and the home in Jelgava was transitioned into a crisis center. Many children living in the orphanage were moved into foster care programs; however, a number of teens were not matched with foster families and therefore left without the support needed to successfully transition into adulthood.
Orphan Outreach had provided humanitarian support to the Jelgava orphanage for years, and now works with the teens who have been displaced. In partnership with local ministries and social work professionals, we work to provide physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual support. In addition, sponsorships, church partnerships, and mission trips offer encouragement and care throughout the year.
