When she’s not in school, Reshma helps her mom by washing the dishes in a large bowl outside their simple home in Lalitpur, a highly vulnerable slum community located just outside Kathmandu, Nepal. A girl with a passion to learn, she attends a local school and then receives mentoring, tutoring, and holistic care at Godawari Education Center. “It is difficult for us to be able to afford things like school bags,” says Reshma’s mother, “but the center provides us with everything needed for her education. She is now doing well in school.”
Fourteen-year old Bipin’s mom also sings the praises of Godawari Education Center. Bipin is in 9th grade, and loves learning Nepali and English. “He now knows how to study,” she says. ”It would be impossible for us to pay for tuition at the center, but we receive the support for everything from books to uniforms and supplies. The center also provided our family with food during the pandemic. I am very thankful.”
Almost a third of the country’s population lives below the global poverty line ($2.17 per day), and the community outreach program—a partnership between Orphan Outreach and National Mission Commission of Nepal—is working diligently to equip and empower the 50 Nepali children who attend the program to build a brighter future.
